The Mattagami Region Conservation Authority was established back in 1962 as the Mattagami Valley Conservation Authority after flooding on the Mattagami River in 1960 and on Town Creek in 1961 led to the loss of life and extensive property damage. It was in 1974 with the amalgamation of the City of Timmins that the MRCA grew to its current size. Although its focus early on was on flooding issues, the Conservation Authority’s program today has expanded to include water management, land management, recreation and conservation education.
