The Mattagami Region Conservation Authority works with other provincial and federal agencies in the monitoring of watershed conditions throughout the year. We use a system of streamflow gauges, snow courses and weather stations to collect a variety of environmental information that is used in the management of streamflows and water levels. The information we collect is used in warning watershed residents if there is a threat of flooding.
The majority of the work is undertaken through the Upper Mattagami Water Management Committee. This Committee is co-chaired by the Conservation Authority, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ontario Power Generation. It also has representation from several stakeholder groups including cottagers, First Nations and the local trappers association. The Committee’s main purpose is to review watershed conditions and if necessary, issue flood advisories and watershed condition statements.
